Is glue-down or floating better for a large Ottawa room?
For large Ottawa rooms, floating floors are typically the better choice due to our significant seasonal temperature swings and the superior stability they provide over expansive areas.
Floating floors excel in large spaces because they can move as one cohesive unit when the subfloor expands and contracts with Ottawa's extreme temperature variations (we can see 60°C+ swings from winter to summer). This movement prevents the buckling, gaps, and edge lifting that commonly plague glue-down installations in rooms over 200-300 square feet. The interlocking system distributes stress across the entire floor rather than concentrating it at individual plank adhesion points.
Ottawa's climate presents unique challenges for glue-down installations in large areas. Our cold winters can make adhesives brittle, while humid summers can cause significant subfloor movement. Concrete subfloors in basements are particularly problematic - they can shift substantially with frost cycles, and any moisture issues will telegraph directly through glue-down planks. Floating floors create a barrier between your finished surface and these subfloor movements.
Installation considerations also favor floating in large rooms. Glue-down requires perfect subfloor preparation across the entire area - any high spots, low spots, or moisture issues become permanent problems. Floating floors can accommodate minor subfloor imperfections and are much more forgiving during installation. This translates to lower labor costs and faster completion, typically 2-3 days versus 4-5 days for glue-down in a large room.
The main exception would be commercial-grade luxury vinyl plank in extremely high-traffic areas where the superior wear resistance of glue-down justifies the installation challenges. However, for residential applications - even busy family rooms or basement rec rooms - quality floating floors provide excellent durability with much better long-term stability.
Professional installation is recommended for either method in large rooms to ensure proper expansion gaps, transitions, and subfloor preparation.
